THIRTYTONORMAL

Happy Thanksgiving!

I figured nobody would be reading tomorrow, so I should send out my Thanksgiving greetings today.

We’re going to miss Thanksgiving dinner for the 5th year in a row.  We might head down to the states tomorrow, but not until after work, so won’t get there until 9 pm.  I don’t particularly like arriving so late, particularly on a holiday, because I might … gasp … not find anything to eat.  If we do decide to leave tomorrow, I’ll fix something to take with us.  No need to set myself up for failure by hoping I’ll find something worthy to eat.

I finally went out and shoveled my own driveway on Friday.  Of course I picked the day it was -10 F … it was SO cold.  The wind picked up yesterday, though, and now it’s 32 F out with 70 mph winds.  Can’t win for losing up here in the frozen north.

It’s been two weeks since I’ve gotten back on track with my eating.  For some reason I decided to start counting my carbs (rather than just winging it as I had been doing).  I’m not much of a counter anyway, but counting carbs appears to work so much better for me than counting calories.  When I count calories I don’t always make the best choices.  Carbs are a whole other story, though.  If you eat high carb foods, you are done almost before you started.  So no cakes, cookies, ice cream, quick breads etc.  Lots of low-carb vegetables and protein.  Haven’t had fruit for a while because the only thing that looks good is bananas and they are pretty high in carbs (as are potatoes … wow … I’d heard eating potatoes were like eating sugar, but honestly I had no idea how carb-heavy they are.)  Plus I’m looking things up before I eat them (what a concept!)

So far I’m thrilled with how easy this is (still!).  And at the amount of energy I have. And how well I sleep.  And that it’s not only annihilated any sugar cravings, but also somehow (because I always thought that the C-word was an inevitable part of going low-carb) find my eliminating totally normal.  Not sure how that happened, but it may be because I drink lots of water and eating more good fats and not much of anything that would stop up the system (I’m talking about you, baked goods).

I have one more week to go in the 21-day challenge.  After that I might look at upping my carbs a bit by adding in fruit once in a while (if I can find some that I like).  I’m still working on going from obese to overweight which was my goal before the end of the year.  Getting my eating under control is primary to me; I know the weight loss will follow at its own pace.  I do need to get some consistency with my exercise, although I am moving more with all this extra energy, just not doing a specific workout.

I hope everybody has a wonderful Thanksgiving.  It’s a joy to spend time with family and friends.

I will walk 500 miles …

eventually.  :)   (I couldn’t embed the song, but here’s the URL.)

So for Mother’s Day I got a FitBit which has been lots of fun.  It measures your activity level as well as your steps (and calories burned).  And it’s gotten me moving because I always want to get those 10,000 steps a day.  So far (I got it Wednesday) it’s been a success … I’ve gotten over 10,000 steps a day and over 5 miles a day, as well as burning about 2500 calories a day.

I have come to several realizations.  If you only have 30 minutes to exercise, 30 Day Shred is a LOT better to do than walking for 30 minutes.  And walking 4 miles at the cabin (with those hills) burns twice the calories that walking 4 miles on flat land burns.

It also evaluates your sleep efficiency … despite getting woken up 8 to 9 times a night (by Mac’s snoring) I have a 95% sleep efficiency which I think is great.

And, best of all, it’s making me park farther away to try to get in those extra steps. And so far the extra exercise has not increased my appetite.

I’ve also been confronted with the fact that just walking (at least at the speed I walk) doesn’t burn a lot of calories, even if you walk for miles and miles.  So I’m trying to walk faster and it’s not easy for me … not sure why.  I listen to fast paced music, but my body just seems to like the stride it likes.  One more comfort zone I need to push myself beyond.

The only thing I don’t care for is their food entry … they seem to not have a lot of foods, so I’m entering in SparkPeople and then transferring the total over to the fitbit website (which is free).  Not sure how long I’ll enter food … we all know how much I dislike doing it … but for now I’d like to see what calories in versus calories burned in relation to the types of foods I eat means for me.

Now I just need to get my bike so I can add that in also.  :)

I chose …

everything.

Fortunately that is no longer true.  I was thinking today, as I was deciding what I wanted for lunch and if I wanted to switch up my usual carb for Fiber One, that I used to think that I was seriously making a choice when I chose everything.  Now I see my choices as this or that, not this AND that.

We might not get out of town today as the roads are pretty bad.  We may try tomorrow, or just wait until next week when the weather is supposed to improve and hopefully the roads are snow-packed and icy.  We don’t fly out until next week so we have some time to wait it out.

Did I ever mention how much I dislike getting stuck/stranded/forced to change plans because of the snow?

I’m getting kind of bored with the tracking (which Always happens), but I’ll stick with it for now.  What I’m finding is that, as Carla said, it’s pretty darn easy to be writing it down when it looks good on paper, and not so easy when it doesn’t.  So I’m hoping that continuing to write it down will stave off the slow slide into over-indulgence.
