THIRTYTONORMAL

the diet coke dilemma

So I’m down to a maximum of 2 diet cokes a day.  Which was really easy. Part of it is that pop has gotten expensive (to me … relatively speaking it’s cheaper than bottled water).  I used to pay $1.99 to $2.50 for a 12-pack.  Now it’s $4.79 if I’m lucky.  And up in the north country you add on $1.20 for recycling.  I’d already quit drinking it when we go out (the fact that so many places had yucky Pepsi which I refuse to drink instead of Coke made that an easy decision).  I can pretty easily see that I could go to no more than 1 a day.

The only reason I do 1 day is that keeping at least some caffeine in my system keeps the migraines at bay.  And since I don’t drink coffee and only like herbal tea, this is an easy effective way.  However, diet coke has yucky artificial stuff in it that I don’t need in my system.

I can do one of two things.  Either I can try to go cold turkey and see if I can avoid my migraine triggers (bright light, like if the sun reflects off somebody’s car mirror into my eyes is an instant migraine and too much sodium).  The too much sodium is pretty easy as avoiding sodium is second nature to me and I don’t like the taste of salt at all.  The photophobia is harder because the light can hit my eyes before I even realize it’s coming.  The third thing is if I don’t have the caffeine in my system will I get the migraines regardless of whether I have any triggers or not.

The other thing I can do is stop the diet cokes and take a caffeine pill every day.  I may have to do that if I go to one diet coke a day anyway.

To be continued …
