THIRTYTONORMAL

Perspective …

You know how people who have lost a significant amount of weight talk about running into somebody they haven’t seen in a while?  And how that person is so surprised at how much they’ve changed and sometimes that person doesn’t even recognize them?

Well, I fly halfway across the country to meet up with some old friends from Australia.  We’ve kept in touch via Christmas letters and now email and Facebook, but I haven’t seen them in person in 14 years (the last time I was in Australia).  They were with my friend’s sister and the first thing out of the sister’s mouth was, “wow, I didn’t even recognize you, you’ve gained so much weight”.

Gee, thanks a lot.  It’s great to see you too.  Sheesh.

Now granted the sister is a bit of a tool, was tactless years ago, and obviously missed the whole “if you can’t say something nice” meme. Still, here I’d been feeling pretty darn good about losing 40 pounds and being on the way to losing even more and she thinks I’m really fat.

Because that’s the “me” they saw, not the one that’s lost 40 pounds, but the one that’s carrying around an extra 50.

Perspective bites.

Ouch! Well, consider the source (as you already have) and don’t even try to guess what she might have said to you before you lost 40 pounds. Forty pounds is awesome! You’ve done so much for your health just by losing that first 40. I gave you a sweet award on my post today.

OMG! How tacky and tactless. You are doing great and don’t let any stupid comment make you feel otherwise.

Yes, she burst your bubble, but you KNOW you are on your way to becoming smaller.

She is tactless and rather cruel (I never tell people they’ve become big/fat – what’s the point? Don’t all fat people KNOW they are big?)

Sadly, when I bump into friends I haven’t seen for years I think how OLD they’ve become! That’s another taboo subject! :)

I hope next time you see your ‘friend’ she is speechless that you’ve lost so much weight.

Eh screw her- don’t let her get to you- I would have said “wow that’s such a rude thing to say! I’ve had a medical condition…” lol. Then refuse to talk about it and let her feel like a jerk :)

Either way- you have done great and I know you’ll lose the rest! Have a good weekend :)

Tish — thanks for the award! I haven’t gotten a chance to pop around to everybody’s blog yet … still catching up with laundry etc.

Karen — I was kind of down that I had let my weight (and good health) just slip away, but it is what it is. I’m over it now. :)

Fat Grump — thanks for stopping by. You are so right … I know better than she does that I don’t look like I did 14 years ago. Too funny on the age thing … I don’t seem to mind that as much because there is nothing I can do about it anyway (plus I have excellent age genes and so far have managed NOT to look older than I am).

  8. Siobhan says:

Thanks, Bee. You always make me smile. :)

  9. MB says:

Damn! I can’t believe she would say that to you. Keep your head held high. You know how far you’ve come and it’s only your perspective that really matters.

    MB — thanks. :)
